How to Clean Your Dishwasher Filter for Better Performance

Did you know that one of the most common reasons for poorly cleaned dishes is a dirty dishwasher filter? This simple maintenance task takes less than five minutes and can dramatically improve your dishwasher's performance. Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter designed to be cleaned monthly.

A 4-Step Guide to a Cleaner Dishwasher

  1. Locate and Remove the Filter: The filter is usually a cylindrical piece located on the floor of the dishwasher, underneath the bottom spray arm. Simply twist it counter-clockwise (there are often arrows to guide you) and pull it straight up to remove it.

  2. Separate the Parts: Most filters consist of two parts: the main cylindrical filter and a flat mesh screen underneath it. Gently separate them.

  3. Rinse Thoroughly: Run both parts of the filter under warm tap water. Use a soft brush (like an old toothbrush) and a little dish soap to gently scrub away any stubborn food particles or grease buildup. Avoid using wire brushes or abrasive pads, as they can damage the mesh.

  4. Reassemble and Lock: Once clean, place the flat mesh screen back in the dishwasher first. Then, insert the cylindrical filter and twist it clockwise until it locks firmly into place. You should feel it click or stop turning. An unlocked filter can cause poor performance and potential damage.

That's it! By doing this simple task once a month, you'll ensure better cleaning results and extend the life of your appliance.

Still Getting Gritty Dishes?

If cleaning the filter doesn't solve the problem, you may have a more significant issue with your spray arms, drain pump, or water inlet valve. We can quickly diagnose the real problem.
